2006: Press Release
Rich Decker Announces his Candidacy
for
House of Representatives District 29-B
as a Republican
For over 30 years, my political science students listened to
me stress that they can make a difference getting involved,
by attending caucus, voting, developing an appreciation for
all political parties, and listening to all sides. Now is the
time for me to step forward. Having always admired and respected
public servants at every level of government, I hope to earn
from the voters that same admiration and respect by organizing
a campaign void of anger, cynicism, distortion, or negativism.
In my quest to represent district 29-B, voters can expect a
vigorous commitment and dedication paralleled to that found
in my classroom and gymnasium. The strength of my team is unwavering
as they have agreed to work tirelessly to gain the respect of
people, communicate the issues at hand, gain the endorsement
of our party and ultimately, achieve your vote as we proceed
through the caucus system.
Although having a major impact for a freshman legislator is
challenging, I will devote myself to those causes that will
help my constituents, our Rochester community and the state
as a whole. Like many people, I'm discouraged by the growing
atmosphere of partisanship, and will make every effort to work
with all people, regardless of party affiliation, to help improve
the quality of life for all. One obvious example would be to
complete the process necessary to have a 4 year university become
a reality in Rochester. Additional issues include (1) the escalating
property taxes is a concern for all of us, especially for commercial
business. Some form of legislative relief is necessary for all
levels of local governments. A partnership needs to be nourished
between St. Paul and every local government unit. (2) Maintaining
a high quality educational system here in Rochester and throughout
Minnesota is of critical importance. Encouraged by the legislature's
most recent increase in funding, we can not rest on the response
from one legislative session. From my experiences in the classroom,
I realize it is especially important to address the day to day
challenges our teachers face. (3) As life expectancy increases,
the growing cost of health care and prescription drugs becomes
paramount in our daily lives. Some relief can be achieved by
a continued effort of both the state and federal government.
This can be tied to state and federal revenue sources and their
distribution. I'm committed to making health care issues a real
priority.
Legislators can be more effective when their party is in the
majority and I’m confident that the Independent Republicans
will remain so. However, I will not hesitate to put community
concerns over partisan politics. Over the next months expect
me to be accessible, open, honest, positive and determined as
I continue making a difference.
Running for office requires a great deal of help and support.
I extend my gratitude to the team of people who have agreed
to assist me as I pursue a seat in the Minnesota State Legislature
and we look forward to a productive journey as we all have the
responsibility to continue making a difference.
